General Alexander Statement Regarding Cybersecurity Awareness Month

October 2010 marks the 7th annual National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Today more than ever before we live and work in cyberspace. It is essential that we safeguard our cyber assets to ensure our protection. The internet is a 'way-of-life' for us - both on a personal level and on a national level.

NSA/CSS is part of the U.S. Government-wide team effort to enhance the nation's cybersecurity. While we are tasked with protecting national security systems we also work closely with other key organizations such as the Department of Homeland Security and the newly formed U.S. Cyber Command that are working together to secure U.S. assets in cyberspace. The team extends to many other organizations both public and private - and it also extends to you. Each of us as individual citizens must take pre-cautions to secure our own assets and systems in cyberspace to ensure that we do not unwittingly become victims or even accessories to cyber criminals. We also must take responsibility to educate and safeguard our children when they go on the network.
