Janelle Romano recognized for extraordinary work in Maryland cybersecurity industry

By NSA Public Affairs

The Cybersecurity Association of Maryland, Inc. presented Janelle Romano with the 2020 Cyber Warrior Woman Award last week. This award recognizes extraordinary women who perform extraordinary work in Maryland’s cybersecurity industry.

Ms. Romano was honored for helping students develop STEM-based skills and also for her devotion to coach cybersecurity and intelligence professionals.

The partnership between NSA and the University of Maryland’s Advanced Cybersecurity Experience for Students (ACES) program was augmented by Romano’s foundational role in its establishment. She helped develop the curriculum specific to national security and cybersecurity, tailored STEM-based instruction and lectures, and helped provide research and internship opportunities.

She has served as a technical mentor and role model at numerous cybersecurity outreach events for students in elementary, middle, and high school, including serving as a mentor at a University of Maryland event which introduced cybersecurity to middle school girls from diverse communities.

Ms. Romano has championed NSA’s patronage and technical mentorship at BitCamp, the University of Maryland’s annual and widely-attended hackathon.
