Today's intelligence information is expected to be delivered in mere seconds. For that reason, the National Security Agency remains a demanding consumer AND an aggressive developer of communications and networking equipment and products. Expanding capabilities currently include advancements in packet and switching technology, more sophisticated network structures, improved multimedia communications networks, ultra-high data rates, new compression techniques plus progressive mobile and satellite communication services.
The commercial marketplace and other users of technology can benefit from our improvements in communications and networking. For example, the NSA has developed global, large-scale packet-switched networks. And the use of fiber-optic technology for networking within the NSA led to communications at multi-mega-bits/second data rates. In addition, NSA representatives on international and national standards committees have improved interoperability between commercial products. Satellite communications have been advanced with small aperture terminals that have multiband capability. The growing need to selectively distribute different levels of information over common networks has led to the Multilevel Information Systems Security Initiative (MISSI) and an evolving family of products. Additionally, the federal government now uses the STU-III telephone developed by the NSA for secure voice communications.
As our advancements in communications and networking techniques continue, they will provide new opportunities to deliver vast amounts of data more efficiently and reliably. In turn, technology users will continue to benefit from technical assistance and move toward resolving interoperability issues.
