Installation & Logistics Intern Program (I&L)

The Installation & Logistics (I&L) Intern Program is for careers in the project management and electrical, power, mechanical or civil engineering fields, supply chain and business management fields.

Architect/Engineering – Individuals pursuing a Bachelor's degree in architecture, civil/structural engineering, electrical engineering (power emphasis) and mechanical engineering will gain valuable work-related experience in a government setting. They will be directly involved with selected NSA facilities construction/renovation projects that will support plant operations, maintenance, infrastructure planning, design development, standards application, project management services and design drawing assistance.

Fire Protection Engineering – Individuals pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering will gain valuable hands on experience working in NSA’s 24/7 operations and monitoring watch center with a team of fire alarm specialists. They will use their problem solving and troubleshooting abilities to provide support to electrical equipment, fire alarm system programming software, smoke detectors, heat detectors, pre-action and wet pipe sprinkler systems and Vesda aspirating systems.

Building Automation and Control System Operations: EMCS/Mechanical Engineers – Individuals with a strong background or interest in building automation and control systems and/or pursuing a mechanical or computer science degrees will support the many facets of Energy Management and Control Systems (EMCS), providing for EMCS system expansion as well as troubleshooting and solving problems with real time EMCS control systems. This also includes maintenance, expansion and troubleshooting of the Ethernet network, routers and switches and covers various serial interfaces, converters and protocols such as BACnet, Arcnet, MS/TP and Modbus. Interns will also gain experience by working on devices such as Direct Digital Controls (DDC) controllers, DDC Logic, sensors and end control devices and such as Variable Frequency Drives (VFD’s), dampers, actuators and valves. This position is in direct support of our Facilities Control Center that serves as the NSAW 24/7 operations and watch center.

Building Automations and Control Systems Operations: SCADA/Electrical Engineers - Individuals with a strong background or interest in building automation and control systems and/or pursuing an Electrical or computer science degrees will support the many facets of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), providing for SCADA system expansion as well as troubleshooting and solving problems with real time SCADA control systems. This also includes maintenance, expansion and troubleshooting of the Ethernet network, Cisco routers and switches and covers various serial interfaces, converters and protocols such Modbus and DNP3. Duties also include working with data bases, development of SQL queries and programming. Interns will also gain experience by working on devices such as power meters, intelligent relays, PDU’s and UPS systems. In addition, valuable experience working with real time automation controllers (RTAC), Remote terminal Units (RTU’s) and Programmable logic controllers ( PLC’s) will be gained. This position is in direct support of our Facilities Control Center that serves as the NSAW 24/7 operations and watch center.

Project Management – Individuals pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Project Management interested in gaining valuable work-related experience in a government setting will be directly involved with selected NSA facilities construction/renovation projects from design through construction, commissioning, activation, and occupancy. Interns will also be involved in ensuring that projects run according to schedule, are cost effective, and meet customers' objectives.

Logistics and Business Operations – Individuals pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Management, Economics or Business Statistics will be directly involved with global logistics support that meets the needs of NSA organizations worldwide. Interns will provide material management services through acquisition, logistics, storage, distribution and cargo services support to the entire Agency and gain valuable work-related experience in a government setting.

About the Program
The program is a 12-week internship program consisting of direct involvement with selected NSA facilities construction/renovation projects from planning and design through construction, commissioning, activation and occupancy. Interns are also involved in ensuring that projects run according to schedule, are cost effective, and meet customer objectives.

Applications are accepted September 1st - November 15th each year.

Salary
Students are paid a competitive salary commensurate with their education level.

  • Students who attend schools in excess of 75 miles from Ft. Meade, MD, are eligible for a round trip airfare ticket to and from school or mileage reimbursement up to the cost of a government-issued airline ticket.
  • Daily transportation to and from work is not provided. Students participating in the program are highly encouraged to bring a vehicle. Carpooling with other students MAY be available but NOT guaranteed
  • Subsidized housing accommodations are available upon request if school is located in excess of 75 miles from NSA main HQs campus

Qualifications

  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must be eligible to be granted a security clearance
  • Must be majoring in Construction Management, Supply Line Management, or a related Facilities/Logistics field.
  • A cumulative GPA point average of 3.0 is preferred
  • Must possess strong written and oral communication skills
  • Must be available for an operational interview and other applicable processing between the months of December 2013 and March 2014
