Theodore Eric Nave, CAPT, Royal Australian Navy, Royal Navy, OBE

CAPT Eric Nave, born in Adelaide, Australia in 1899, contributed significantly to the safety and security of Allied countries throughout a career spanning the period 1917 to 1949. His foundational work unravelling Japanese Naval telegraphy and breaking Imperial Japanese Naval codes was instrumental in supporting Allied operational forces in the South West Pacific Area, led by General Douglas MacArthur.

Patrick R. Gallagher, Jr.

All can thank Child for the form and substance of this testing and instruction.

James Radford

James “Jim” Radford developed special-purpose devices (SPDs) that successfully solved otherwise intractable cryptanalytic problems. His innovations for NSA continued over five generations from the late 1970s into the 2000s. His successes were built on a solid foundation of computer-based cryptanalysis. SPDs are computers that have been custom-built to provide specific applications for a particular analytic problem.

James Lovell

Honored by David Kahn as “the Father of American Cryptanalysis,” James Lovell was born in Boston in 1737 and graduated from Harvard nineteen years later. In 1760, he became an instructor at a local school where his father John served as headmaster. Both were still there when the Revolution broke out, with James being imprisoned by the British after the Battle of Bunker Hill.

Evelyn Akeley

Born in Manhattan in 1907, Evelyn Akeley excelled at mathematics, music, and sports at Smith College. She earned a master’s from Columbia, then joined the mathematics faculty at Skidmore College. In 1942, Akeley learned of an opportunity to join the Signal Corps, the parent of the army’s codebreaking effort, the Signal Intelligence Service (SIS). She was given a series of textbooks authored by William Friedman, and told to conduct a two-month training course for new civilian and military recruits who began arriving days later.
