Waiting on the new release would be best, Seeing you are on Redhat 7.2.
Most of it is writen is C and if you have installed the development packages on you system then you should have gcc installed as well.
If you are starting out with doing kernal stuff a very helpfull web site is (http://kernelnewbies.org)
