	The Debian kernel-package provides for such a device; we call
 it FLAVOURS. I am attaching the FLAVOURS file from the kernel-package  package in the hope that people can use the patches in the file. Of  course, if you are using kernel-package, the --append_to_version  argument to make-kpkg provides a better and more flexible solution.

ps. The FLAVOURS mechanism predates the EXTRAVERSIONS variable by a couple of years
