Media Destruction Guidance

Media Destruction Guidance is available for those who need to sanitize, destroy or dispose of media containing sensitive or classified information. For destroying paper only, a list of evaluated High Security Crosscut Paper Shredders is available that includes the names, model numbers, manufacturers, and distributors. The evaluated products list for Punched Tape Destruction Devices contains model, manufacturer and contact information for devices evaluated to meet stringent performance requirements for destroying this media. The Optical Media Destruction Devices evaluated products list provides model numbers and manufacturer and distributor information for destroying CDs and DVDs. For sanitizing magnetic media, a list of evaluated Degaussers is available that includes the manufacturer, model, and type.

The Destruction Evaluations and Guidance Branch of the NSA has determined that High Security Disintegrators listed on the Evaluated Products List (EPL) provide adequate security for the destruction of paper, optical media (CDs and DVDs) and punched tape as annotated on the EPL. The list of evaluated High Security Disintegrators includes the model numbers, capacities, manufacturers, and distributors. When destroying optical media in disintegrators, it is recommended that paper be mixed with the optical media during destruction. Please contact the manufacturer to determine if a specific product is mechanically suited for optical media destruction.

The products on these lists have met NSA specific performance requirements, however, inclusion on the list does not constitute an endorsement by NSA or the U.S. government.
